Spiritual Lessons Learned in Building
During the last 21 years as missionaries we have had over 25 major moves and many more small moves as well. Moving is always an adventure, but at times it has been a struggle too, especially since we now have three children. During previous deputation times in the USA, we began to feel the need of a home in the States that we could use each time we return. Such a home would save rental costs and meet many needs. In 2006 we talked with our mission leaders about the possibility of building a home and were encouraged by them. We also learned that our housing allowance would allow for a building loan.
Later, we asked our partners about this project and many encouraged us and several congregations said they want to become involved. Work began at the end of May 2007 and completed in June 2008. We had 192 people from 41 different congregations come to help. Many of those people came many times over.
One church sent a team to live with us for week. Youth groups came and stayed overnight to work. Many folks gave up their vacation days to help us. Others gave gifts of materials or let us borrow tools and equipment. The youngest person to help was 6 years old, the oldest was 85. One man gave up his vacation and traveled from New York State to spend a week with us in helping build. Both men and women did a great variety of tasks and when it was completed we had a home, bigger and more beautiful than we expected.
The home is now rented out and part of the home has a large area where we could store our office and ministry equipment as well as our personal belongings. We are looking forward to enjoying this home next time we are in the USA. It will be nice to not have to find a place to rent and have to move our things again. God provided through people who gave of themselves in Jesus' love.
