| Zambia's location |
Central Africa is one of the three most needed
areas of the world for Bible Translation. (The other two are central Asia
and the south Pacific world regions.) There are over 900 language
groups in Nigeria and central Africa that do not have While we are currently located in Zambia, we are also involved in Bible translation in the Congo. Most of our work is in Zambia but we are also currently helping the Taabua Bible Translation Project in the south east part of the Congo. Ken also made trips into the Congo in 2005 and 2006. He was able to make a trip back to the north east part of the Congo to visit the Mayogo people with whom we worked for many years. Zambia Zambia was known as Northern Rhodesia when it was administered by the South Africa Company from 1891 until it was taken over by the United Kingdom in 1923. During the 1920s and 1930s, advances in mining spurred development and immigration. The name was changed to Zambia upon independence in 1964. In the 1980s and 1990s, declining copper prices and a prolonged drought hurt the economy. Elections in 1991 brought an end to one-party rule. The new president has launched a far-reaching anti-corruption campaign in 2002. These leaders need your prayers so that Zambia may truly become a Christian nation and a leader among African countries. Copper prices have increased 6 fold since 2004 and the local currency (called the Kwacha) has increased its value 35 percent against the dollar. Such a quick increase is hard to deal with for many Zambians and missionaries like us. Stability in the currency will help the economy. Within Zambia there are 42 languages and around six to ten of them still do not have any Bible translation. Besides seeking to work with these languages we are also training Zambian missionaries to go to reach out to neighboring countries so that every language can have access to God's Word. The Zambian people are some of the finest in all of Africa. They are polite, well organized and long to be better educated. Still the fear of witchcraft controls many peoples lives as well as those in the established churches. The time is now for Zambia! This country can be a great example to the rest of Africa. There is a harvest of souls in central Africa and we need you to pray with us for this land. |
